Het is van nature rijk aan suiker en verspreidt zich al snel in grote aangrenzende gebieden zoals China en India.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Suiker kwam via de Arabische wereld naar Europa waar deze &#8220;zeldzame specerij&#8221; bij de adel op tafel verscheen. Aangezien suikerriet slecht gedijde in Europa, introduceerden de Europeanen het in Amerika en verspreidden het over heel Latijns-Amerika. Heel wat producten, waaronder suiker, zijn schaars geworden. Hoewel suiker al een stuk betaalbaarder is geworden dan een paar eeuwen eerder, dwingt de druk van de vraag heel wat industri\u00eblen ertoe wetenschappelijk onderzoek te voeren naar een nieuwe bron van suiker.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns my-10 align-items-center text-white is-layout-flex wp-container-11\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-group px-5 is-layout-flow\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container\">\n<p>Enkele tientallen jaren eerder, in 1747, had Andreas Sigismund, een Berlijnse professor, ontdekt dat bepaalde bietensoorten een hoog suikergehalte hebben. Een van zijn studenten, Franz Karl Achard, laat zich inspireren door zijn onderzoek en industrialiseert het proces. In die periode zien we dan enkele suikerfabrieken verschijnen in Duitsland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Het probleem is dat het suikerrendement van dit proces erg laag is. Het proces om suiker uit bieten te winnen werd de voorbije twee eeuwen geoptimaliseerd en is inmiddels gemaximaliseerd. De uitdagingen zijn niet langer de extractie- en kristallisatiecapaciteit, maar eerder de maximale effici\u00ebntie van het proces met behoud van een beperkt energieverbruik.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Europa is &#8216;s werelds grootste producent van bietsuiker.
